THE FACTS ABOUT LAPAROSCOPIC SUPRACERVICAL HYSTERECTOMY (LSH )

Background

Hysterectomy is the second most common surgery for women in the United States with approximately 600,000 procedures completed each year. Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy (LSH) is an alternative to conventional hysterectomy. LSH is a new minimally invasive technique that was largely developed with the patient’s needs in mind. LSH uses a thin, lighted telescope called a laparoscope that acts as a video camera in conjunction with small surgical instruments that are inserted through three to four small incisions in the abdomen. Each incision is typically less than one inch.

The LSH procedure removes the uterus where the problem is
and leaves the cervix. Additionally, LSH allows for the removal
or preservation of the ovaries. “It is important to know that
there is no medical reason to remove a healthy cervix during a
hysterectomy. LSH leaves the cervix intact which may help to
maintain pelvic floor support and reduce future prolapse and
incontinence,” states SJMO OB/Gyn Adam Ziff, DO.

A hysterectomy can be done to treat a range of conditions including
fibroids, menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding), endometriosis
along with other conditions affecting the uterus and cervix.

ADVANTAGES
“Open” or the traditional total abdominal hysterectomy used to be
the most common type of the procedure offered to women. The
LSH procedure has changed the way women view hysterectomy.
LSH results in less trauma and stress to the body than total
abdominal hysterectomy. It also minimizes scars, reduces postoperative
pain, and shortens recovery time.

LSH can be done in an outpatient setting, meaning that a
woman can be home resting within 24 hours. With LSH, most
women are back to their normal activities in one to two weeks
compared to convectional hysterectomy recovery that requires
four to six weeks.

CAUTIONS
As with all surgery, hysterectomy involves risks including blood
loss, infection and damage to other internal organs. While LSH
can accommodate most benign reasons why women need a
hysterectomy, LSH is not an option for women who have been
diagnosed with cancer of the uterus or cervix.
