THE FACTS ABOUT SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Background

Shockwave therapy is a new treatment option for patients with
the heel and foot pain of Plantar Fasciitis. Both high and low
energy shockwave therapy has become a useful tool in treating
the overuse injury of Plantar Fasciitis. An inflammation can occur
in the fibrous Fascia, which connects the heel bone to the base of
the toes creating pain in the sole of the foot.

Shockwave therapy generates pulses of high-pressure sound that
travel through the shin. Soft tissue and bone that are subjected
to the pulses of high-pressure heal back stronger. The beneficial
effect from the high-pressure waves may be from the growth of
new blood vessels, “neovascularization” in small cavities that are
created by the pulses. New blood vessels to an area of tissue
promote healing.

Those most at risk for developing Plantar Fasciitis include women,
those that are overweight, and individuals who spend most of
the day on their feet either walking or standing on hard surfaces.
Podiatrist Jeffrey B. Klein explains, “Most people with Plantar
Fasciitis improve with simple exercises, wearing heel cups, or
other non-invasive treatments. However, for those who do not
experience relief, shockwave therapy may be an option for you.”

ADVANTAGES
Shockwave therapy is a new non-invasive procedure that requires
less recovery time than traditional surgery. Three quarters of
patients show positive results after just one treatment of high
intensity shockwave therapy. Shockwave therapy can also be
administered to both heels at the same time, replacing previous
methods where a patient would be placed in a wheelchair.
Shockwave therapy also allows patients to return to their daily
activities within a day of the treatment.

CAUTIONS
Although many patients experience success with shockwave therapy,
the procedure is not beneficial in all cases. In addition, shockwave
therapy is not recommended until patients have used stretching,
night splints and other non-invasive treatment for about 6 months.
