THE FACTS ABOUT Balloon Sinuplasty
Background
Sinusitis, an infection causing inflammation and swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses, is one of the most common chronic health problems in the U.S. Affecting 37 million Americans each year, this condition significantly impacts physical, functional, and emotional quality of life.

Often referred to as a “sinus attack,” symptoms include facial pain, sinus pressure, nasal blockage, headache, and fatigue. The condition may be acute (lasting four weeks or less), chronic(lasting four to twelve weeks), or recurrent (returning several times within a year).
Today, a new minimally invasive outpatient technique called “balloon sinuplasty” is helping to provide relief. Similar to angioplasty for blocked arteries, this new technology uses a small, flexible balloon catheter that is placed through the nostril into the blocked sinus passageway. When the balloon is inflated, it gently restructures and opens the sinus passageway, restoring normal sinus drainage and function.
“Balloon sinuplasty allows physicians to treat sinusitis entirely through the nostrils – without the tissue or bone removal required with conventional endoscopic sinus surgery,” says Sam Bahu, Otolaryngologist, SJMO. “Patients can usually go home the same day.”
Until now, sinusitis patients have been limited to just two treatment options: antibiotic therapy and topical steroid nasal sprays. While these therapies can alleviate symptoms for some patients, treatments such as these are often inadequate for at least 20-25% of sufferers.
Balloon sinuplasty offers many benefits to sinusitis patients. Unlike traditional invasive sinus surgery, balloon sinuplasty is associated with reduced bleeding and less post-procedure discomfort for patients.
In rare circumstances, untreated sinusitis may result in meningitis or brain abscess.
